The Moment Students Remembered to Breathe: A Mindfulness Initiative from the Classroom

A mindfulness initiative created by a school counselor teaching elementary children what to do when big emotions arise in the classroom.

There are moments in schools that educators never forget.

Moments when a child discovers they have the ability to calm their own mind.

Moments when a classroom full of children suddenly remembers a tool they practiced together.

Moments when something simple, like a breath, changes the energy in the entire room.

One of those moments happened in an elementary school classroom after a difficult situation on the playground.

A Classroom Full of Big Emotions

It was near the end of the school year, one of those warm days when students are full of energy and excitement.

During recess, a serious accident happened on the playground. A student was injured and had to be taken away in an ambulance.

The children who witnessed the accident were understandably upset.

They were crying.
They were worried.
They were asking questions that adults sometimes struggle to answer.

Teachers gathered the students into a classroom so they could process what had happened. The room was filled with anxiety and fear.

The School Counselor Stepped In

The principal turned to the school counselor and said:

“Amy, they need you.”

Amy, a school counselor who had been introducing mindfulness practices to students throughout the year, walked into the room. (You can read more about Amy’s journey bringing mindfulness to her school here)

She saw dozens of frightened faces looking up at her.

Moments like this can feel overwhelming for both children and adults, but Amy had been teaching the students simple mindfulness tools all year long through short Mindful Monday announcements.

So she gently spoke to the group.

“Friends,” she said softly, “let’s do our Figure 8 breathing.”

Something Remarkable Happened

Before Amy could even guide the exercise, something incredible happened.

Every child raised a hand and began tracing the shape of a figure eight in the air.

They started breathing slowly and steadily, just as they had practiced many times before.

Amy didn’t have to lead them.

The students already knew what to do.

Later, Amy shared:

“That was the moment I knew they got it.”

As the children continued tracing the figure eight and breathing together, the energy in the room began to shift.

The crying softened.

Shoulders relaxed.

The room slowly grew calmer.

A Reflection for Educators

Have you ever had a classroom moment like this?
A moment when a child used a mindfulness or breathing tool exactly when they needed it. These are the moments that remind us why this work matters.
Sometimes the smallest practices… a breath, a pause, a moment of awareness… can make a meaningful difference for children.

If this story comes to mind when you think about a colleague, counselor, or therapist who supports children every day, feel free to share it with them.

Why Practicing Mindfulness Before the Moment Matters

This story is a powerful reminder of why teaching mindfulness tools to children is so important. When children practice breathing and mindfulness regularly during calm moments, those skills become familiar and accessible.

So when a stressful or emotional situation arises, they don’t need to learn a new strategy. They simply remember what they already know.

Breathing exercises can help children:

  • calm their nervous system
  • reduce anxiety
  • regain focus
  • process strong emotions
  • feel more in control of their bodies and minds

And often, these tools are incredibly simple.

Sometimes it begins with something as small as tracing a shape in the air and taking a slow breath.

If you’re looking for ideas, here are several breathing exercises for children you can try in your classroom.

Why This Moment Matters

Amy’s story also shows the ripple effect that simple mindfulness practices can have in a school community.

In Amy’s school:

  • 400+ students were introduced to mindfulness and breathing tools
  • Teachers began using calming practices in their classrooms
  • Students shared which breathing exercises helped them most
  • Children learned self-regulation skills they could use during stressful moments

Small practices repeated over time created a meaningful shift in the school environment.

What Amy Implemented

After completing the School Yoga Program, Amy introduced several simple practices in her school community:

  • Mindful Monday announcements to teach breathing tools to the entire school
  • Short mindfulness activities students practiced regularly
  • A yoga recess club for interested students
  • Breath-of-the-month practices for teachers to use with their classes

Because students practiced these tools throughout the year, they knew exactly what to do when they needed them most.

The Power of Simple Tools for Social Emotional Learning

In many schools today, educators and therapists are searching for practical ways to support children’s social emotional learning (SEL).

Mindfulness practices such as breathing exercises, gentle movement, and mindful awareness can help children develop essential self-regulation skills.

When these tools are introduced consistently and practiced regularly, children begin to build a personal toolkit they can access whenever they need it.

As Amy discovered in that unforgettable classroom moment, students often remember more than we realize.

They remember the practices.

They remember the rhythm of the breath.

And sometimes, in the middle of a difficult day, they remember to pause and breathe.

Imagine This in Your School

What would it look like if students in your school had tools like this?

If children practiced breathing and mindfulness regularly, would they remember those skills during stressful moments?

This is exactly what educators around the world are creating through the Kids Yoga Stories School Yoga Program.

Bringing Mindfulness Tools into Schools

Educators often tell us they would love to bring yoga and mindfulness practices into their schools but aren’t sure where to start.

That’s exactly why we created the School Yoga Program.

The program walks educators step-by-step through creating a customized yoga and mindfulness program that fits the needs and preferences of their school or community.

“This was hands down one of the best trainings I’ve ever done! I went from feeling overwhelmed to having a clear, step-by-step plan that I could actually implement.”
— Amy Ketner, School Counselor

When educators introduce yoga and mindfulness practices into schools, children learn skills they can use for the rest of their lives.

Sometimes the change begins quietly.

One classroom.
One breath.
One moment that matters.
