5 Island Yoga Poses Using a Chair
Welcome back to our chair yoga poses series! This month’s theme is island yoga!
Integrating movement into the students’ learning experiences is so important, and I’m hoping this year-long series will help to bring yoga into your life in a fun, creative, and easy way. Each month, this series will feature a different theme that includes five chair yoga poses and a recommended yoga book for kids. This month’s theme is “tropical island.” These five island-themed yoga poses could be done:
- during a transition time in the classroom
- during a subject change in your homeschool classroom
- at home when you’re stuck indoors
- when you would like to practice yoga in a small space
Begin your pretend island trip with Hello, Bali, a yoga book based on a trip to the island of Bali. Imagine all the things you’ll see and do while visiting a tropical island. Engage the children’s five senses as they bring the island to life through their minds and bodies.
Clear the space, grab a chair, practice barefoot, and unleash your imagination!

5 Tropical Island Yoga Poses Using a Chair
1. Pretend to be a surfer
How to practice Warrior 2 Pose: from standing position in front of your chair, step one foot back, placing the foot so that it is facing slightly outward. Take your arms up parallel to the ground, bend your front knee, and look forward. Pretend to be a surfer riding the waves. Switch sides and repeat the steps.
2. Pretend to be a swimmer
How to practice Warrior 3 Pose: stand on one leg with your arms straight out in front of you, holding the back of the chair. Extend the other leg behind you, flexing your foot. Bend your torso forward. Pretend to be swimming in the ocean. Switch sides and repeat the steps.
3. Pretend to be a dancer
How to practice Dancer’s Pose: stand tall in Mountain Pose behind your chair. Then grab the back of your chair with your right hand, stand on your right leg, reach your left leg out behind you, and place the outside of your left foot into your left hand. Bend your torso forward, with your right hand on the chair for balance, and arch your leg up behind you. Pretend to be a dancer warming up for a performance. Switch sides and repeat the steps.
4. Pretend to be riding a scooter
How to practice Chair Pose: in front of your chair, stand tall in Mountain Pose with your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees, and keep a straight spine. Take your straight arms up in front of you, look up, and try sinking a little deeper into your knees as if you’re about to sit back down in the chair. Pretend to be riding a scooter around the island.
5. Pretend to be a sunbather
How to practice Mountain Pose: sit tall with your legs hip-width apart and feet facing forward. Take your arms straight alongside your body and imagine being a steady, tall mountain. Pretend to be a sunbather on the beach.
