How to practice Warrior 3 Pose
Welcome back to our Kids Love Yoga (#kidsloveyoga) pose challenge.
Each month, we feature a new yoga pose you can practice with your children. Check out the collection of pictures below, where children and adults demonstrate the focus pose. This month’s challenge is Warrior 3 Pose.
My daughter and I took a couple of trips this summer to visit family in England and Canada. To prep for the trips, we talked about what was going to happen, how we were going to travel, who we would see, and what we would do there. My daughter loves popping into the Airplane Pose when we talk about our plane trips!
Join us for this month’s pose: Warrior 3 Pose
Also known as: Airplane Pose
Sanskrit name: Virabhadrasana III
Benefits:
- Improves balance and coordination
- Firms the belly
- Strengthens leg and back muscles
- Opens your chest and shoulders
You could pretend to be a submarine, scuba diver, hang glider, bird, airplane, swimmer, skater, or parrot.
How to practice Warrior 3 Pose:
Start by standing tall in Mountain Pose. Then shift your weight to stand on one leg. On an inhale, slowly bend your torso forward and squeeze your shoulder blades together while extending your arms and the other leg behind you.
Gaze at the floor in front of your foot. Flex your foot so that your toes are pointing at the ground. Elongate your neck and straighten your spine so that a straight line runs from your head to your foot. Ensure that your hips are parallel to the ground.
Imagine that you are an airplane gliding through the sky. (To take a further challenge in this pose, try extending your arms out in front of you. Firm your belly.)
Come out of the pose on an exhale, lowering your leg to the ground. Take a few deep breaths. Switch sides and repeat the steps.
You could also practice Warrior 3 Pose with a group of people in a row (see below for a sample picture).
