Praise for Sophia’s Jungle Adventure |
Book Review by All Done Monkey
Excerpt: “Finally a book that spoke to the way he likes to read – in motion! As someone who has always loved yoga, I adore these books because they finally give me a fun, easy way to introduce my son to yoga. I tried to teach him some movements myself when he was younger, without much success. And as my own yoga practice has fallen by the wayside, so has my motivation to teach him.
Enter Kids Yoga Stories, which make yoga fun for kids by setting the movements within the context of a story, so that each motion taught is linked to an action in the storyline. Kids zoom like an airplane as Sofia and her family travel to Costa Rica (yes, our beloved Costa Rica!), salute the sun with Sofia before she begins her hike through the jungle, and act like the monkeys and jaguars she sees.
Along the way, they also learn about the importance of saving the environment for these beautiful creatures, in a way that is easy for children to understand and therefore to care about.
The book is also a great resource for parents, who can refer to the full, illustrated list of poses and a parent-teacher guide at the back of the book.
Monkey loved acting out the story and imitating Sofia’s poses. I was impressed with his attention to detail, as he even made sure to hold his hands the same way as she does. Of course, he often decided to change things up a bit: “How about like this? How about upside-down? How about like a robot?”
This kind of creativity is encouraged by Giselle, whose motivation in creating these interactive books is to “get children moving, learning, and having fun.” Mission accomplished!”

Book Review by Moms Gone Global
Excerpt: “This lovely children’s fiction not only includes a sweet and engaging story, but also great illustrations to demonstrate kid-friendly yoga poses and an insightful parent-teacher guide … I really like that the book promotes an underlying theme of respect — for yourself, others, and the environment. The Kids Yoga Stories Guide included in the book wisely encourages parents and teachers to “model and guide an experience where compassion and kindness are integral. This is a great read and a fun way to introduce your little global citizens to yoga. It also serves as a great complement to any kid’s yoga tools that you may currently be using!”

Book Review by Vibrant Wanderings
Excerpt: “There is so much that I love about this book. Not only is it beautifully illustrated and a brilliant way to weave together reading and yoga, but is also provides an excellent way to learn about the story’s setting of Costa Rica, and the jungle animals who live there. Many of the yoga poses shown are inspired by animal movements, sparking an interest in these creatures, and making the book a great jumping off point for budding yogis and explorers alike. I’ll admit, too, that I like slithering like a snake and flying like a toucan just as much as Annabelle does.”

Book Review by Yogainmyschool.com
Excerpt: “Flipping through it quickly, I loved the colorful illustrations and the corresponding inset yoga pose on each page. Upon further reading, I found a creative, interactive, educational book perfect for 3-8 year olds. Sophia’s Jungle Adventure has an eco-friendly theme great for use in classrooms. This book is a fabulous way to learn about the rainforest and incorporate yoga poses (hooray for kineasthetic learning). … The pre-school groups (ages 2-5) I teach loved the book. Their favorite poses were Alligator and Monkey. … Giselle has done a wonderful job of combining her educational expertise, enthusiasm for yoga and love of children into a useable and enjoyable children’s yoga book.”

Book Review on MindBodyGreen.com
Excerpt: “Kids yoga books to me are a journey like a yoga class is: an interplay between imagination and action. I can definitely see kids reading and doing yoga on their own through this book.”
Sarah Herrington, OMSchooled

“Here’s what I love about this book & coloring book:
- Great eco-friendly theme! Sophia & her friends are in an Environment Club at school

- Each page in the book includes the targeted pose in bold font in the text & a picture of the pose in the top right corner. This makes it easy to keep the flow in a kids yoga storytime especially for those who are new to yoga and may not know all the poses. Additional details are provided in the back of the book.
- There are 18 poses in the book. Plenty to fill most kids yoga classes for the targeted age range (4-8 year olds). For a longer class, you could add poses for other animals you might see in a jungle and talk about conservation/eco-friendly choices to extend the theme. Suggestions are provided in the book.
- Each page in the coloring book includes the name of that item in the story, the name of the pose and illustrations of both Sophia doing the pose and some of the elements from that scene in the story. The illustrations and font sizes are large & clear.
- The Parent-Teacher Guide section at the end of the book & the coloring book are goldmines of great tips for setting up a fun & safe yoga storytime for kids. Gotta share this quote from the end of both books: “Ooze creativity, imagination and abundance. Encourage each child to tap into his or her own creativity and imagination through movement and breath. Welcome quiet times for reflection. Pause often. Remember, it’s not the end result, but the journey where miracles happen…“. Giselle’s passion and love for kids shines through

- Love the inclusion of Savasana at the end of the book & the idea of Sophia putting her notebook on her belly!
- The book has bright colorful illustrations & a nice easy-to-read font size.
- Lots of great vocabulary & descriptive language will make this book fun to use in my work as a SLP

“As a children’s yoga trainer, I was thrilled to discover Sophia’s Jungle Adventures, and really ALL of the Kids’ Yoga Stories by Giselle S. There is no better way to engage young children, ages 2.5 – 8 years, in the learning process than to make it playful, engaging and adventuresome through story, beautiful color illustrations and joyful characters. These books are a home run. Sophia’s Jungle Adventure is a must-have resource for every kids’ yoga teachers toolbox. Children will request this story again and again and copies are sure to become lovingly dog-eared in no time at home, school or in the studio. Be sure to check out the associated coloring book as well!”

“Really love this book! I am a kids yoga teacher, and I use books all the time in my classes. Sophia’s Jungle Adventure is great because there are pictures of yoga poses that correspond to the story. I used to have to interrupt the story to show the kids what yoga pose to do along with the book-sometimes it is difficult to do a yoga pose holding a book at the same time! With this book my students see the picture in the top corner of the page and do the yoga pose that they see! Very sweet story that was the perfect length to use in my half-hour preschool yoga class (ages 4-6). There is also a companion coloring book (Sophia’s Jungle Adventure Coloring Book) that has yoga poses to color- a great thing to use in yoga class to help reinforce the poses the kids just did! Love Giselle’s work and can’t wait to use more of her books in yoga class!”

“I was recently introduced to this book and fell in love with it. I teach yoga for kids in Portland, OR as well as work as an Occupational Therapy Assistant with kids incorporating yoga into many of their lesson plans and routines. The ease in which it is to use this book is a testament to Ms. Shardlow’s understanding of the yoga practice as well as developmentally appropriate ways to teach it. This has the full package with great visuals, easy to read print with each page accompanied by a picture of a pose. In the back there is somewhat of a glossary of the poses and the names along with the corresponding pictures creating a fluid and cohesive batch of examples that can be expanded upon and invite creativity. With the coloring book as an added bonus, Sophia’s Jungle Adventure is a hit and is a gift to anyone interested and energized to bring yoga to children.”

“I was recently given Sofia’s Jungle Adventure as a gift. It is wonderful way to introduce children to yoga. The poses are fun and easy for young children to do. I would recommend this book to any parent of young children who would like to help their children burn off some energy in a quiet way. It’s great for those days that you are stuck inside the house due to poor weather. My children loved this book so much I purchased copies for friends and for my daughter’s school.”

“I recently brought this book home for my 3 year old daughter and it ended up being a family affair. My 5 year old son absolutely loved doing all the yoga poses throughout the story. It’s a great interactive story with memorable connections from the story to the pose. Definitely a great book to continually bring out to challenge ourselves!”

“I purchased Sophie’s Jungle Adventure to use in my first grade classroom for little “brain breaks” throughout the day, and my students love both the story and the yoga. I have very little yoga experience but the poses are straightforward and easy for the kids, and me, to do. The story is engaging and relevant and has sparked many class discussions. Now I also do the yoga with my four year old at home who loves to listen to the story and follow along on his own. Great fun for everyone! A must-have for any primary teacher.”

“I bought this book for my daughter and we both really love it. The book is geared to children a bit older than my daughter (she’s 2), but she’s still a huge fan of the story of Sophia and her trip to Costa Rica. It’s a great introduction to yoga; my daughter is already doing a lot of the yoga poses herself. The illustrations are very colorful and imaginative as well. My daughter requests this book regularly as her night-time (and day-time) go-to story book. I would definitely recommend this book!”

“We got this book a few months ago and we actually use it quite often. It is a complete 30-45 minute adventure story of a little girl named Sofia, who loves learning about animals, imitating them, and caring about natural environment. I am a parent of a 7 years old boy and a certified Children Yoga Teacher. I would recommend this book, as well as its companion – a coloring book; it’s fun and creative, also highly educative: Children learn about yoga poses and about the world we live in.”

“I bought this book for my friends two girls aged 5 and 6 and over Christmas, we read it together and they loved it! They enjoyed interacting and figuring out how to do the yoga poses and in fact we read it twice because they wanted to do the poses over and over. The poses were easy to grasp through the illustrations but challenging enough to keep the kids interested and engaged. The subtle but important messages about protecting the environment were also powerful. I also like that all the yoga poses are summarised in the back. I will definitely be buying more of these books for other kids as they were a hit!”

“I gave this as a gift to my friend’s daughter. She just loved it! She (5 yr old) and her little sister (2 yr old) looked at the pics and play around with the poses all afternoon. It was darling to see. Everyone got into the fun including their very active brother (4 yr old). It was lovely to see the whole family interact together in front of a book rather than in front of TV or some video game. I plan to give this book out as gifts in the future! Thanks.”

“Yoga is such an important part of my life, so it is only natural that my daughter wants to learn her downward dogs from her cobras. She has taken a few kids yoga classes and will soon start going to the kids yoga class at the same studio I go to, but I want to keep encouraging her to play around with yoga at home. At 7 years old my daughter is already a seasoned traveler, so she loves that the character Sophia is on a trip to a new country. She loves following along with the different yoga poses Sophia does throughout the story. Even I have fun doing them with her!”
Nicole Kempka, Red Lotus Mama

“What a delightful children’s yoga book that is sure to inspire kids and parents alike. It is beautiful, creative and easy to follow along, even for the yoga novices. A gem and must get book.”

“Have read this to my daughter about 50 times now. She keeps requesting it. I found her “reading” it to herself this morning – she was flicking through the pages saying what she could remember – things like “ride camels? noooo”"
Danya Webb, mother to 3 year old girl

“I am so very inspired and delighted by all of the fantastic and creative stories woven by Giselle Shardlow and her Kids Yoga Stories series. They offer themselves as a friendly guide and reminder as to how yoga can transform and bring about joy to kid’s lives. If you haven’t read them yet, do so now!”
Atosa Babaoff, Yoga Teacher in San Francisco

“Giselle, my son loved Sophia’s Jungle Adventure and “read” it three times today, showing me his yoga poses! Really adorable, and such a wonderful idea.”
Frances Baca, mother to 3 1/2 year old boy
