Phases of the Moon Yoga (+ Free Printable)

“Oh, look, it’s the new moon,” said my dad.

“It’s not new. I’ve seen it before,” replied my niece.

This was a sweet interaction my dad had with my niece when she was a toddler, years ago—and such a lovely reminder of the innocence of young children when they experience nature through fresh eyes.

So it was with such a pleasure to speak to Nicolette from Wilder Child about the phases of the moon and learn more about her Kids Moon Club, a year-long journey of activities encouraging families to align to nature’s rhythms.

My teacher, Katie Rose, talks a lot about the benefits of moon bathing and living a life according to the moon cycles, as described in Ayurveda (India’s sister science to yoga). This is something I’ve always wanted to learn more about, and I’m excited to join Nicolette’s program.

So when Nicolette asked if we could put together a moon yoga sequence for her community, I was honored. We talked about how mother nature is a co-regulator for children and how following the moon cycle can really help to calm the nervous system and ground us to our energetic roots.

PHASES OF THE MOON YOGA

Below you’ll find five poses that will take you through the phases of the moon. We added an extra “peace moon” as a chance to lay in Resting Pose to integrate your experience. Take a few moments here to take a few deep breaths and send gratitude to mother nature.

Don’t worry if you haven’t tried yoga before, just jump in and give it a go. Practice barefoot on a non-slip surface, if possible. Clear any obstacles and ensure the safety of yourself and your children. Don’t worry about perfectly aligned poses, but rather, just enjoy each pose while thinking about the phases of the moon.

I am the new moon.

How to practice Child’s Pose: Sitting on your heels, slowly bring your forehead down to rest on the floor in front of your knees. Rest your arms down alongside your body and take a few deep breaths. Pretend to be the new moon.

How to practice Camel Pose: Come to a kneeling position with your toes either curled under or flat on the ground. Lift your head, open your chest, squeeze your shoulders, and place your palms on your buttocks. Gently take your hips forward while shifting your shoulders back, slowly arching your back. If it’s comfortable, take your hands to your heels and relax your head. Pretend to be the full moon.
