I have to tell you the cutest thing — one day we were coming back from the park and the bus got stopped at a light such that there was a beam of sunlight coming down directly at us. My son turned around and said to me, “Saluda al sol” and then he did the pose with his hands over his head — I couldn’t believe it! He actually had taught that all to himself! We are now working on the tree pose and he seems to get quite a kick out of seeing mom on 1 leg!

Sofia en una Aventura por la Selva (Spanish Edition) is a great book to use in homeschooling because – as with all the books from Kids Yoga Stories – it encourages very active learning. Kids will really engage with the story and the language as they do the yoga poses throughout the book. What better way to learn the words for snake and jaguar then by acting like snakes and jaguars? Beginning learners can focus on these basic words, while more advanced students can discuss the story. Kids, most of whom are natural environmentalists, will also really respond to the book’s theme of conservation. It also includes a Parent-Teacher guide!

What a sweet book! I teach Spanish and also ESL, and this book is such a useful tool to incorporate kinesthetic learning into vocabulary and commands. We actually have a unit about the rainforests in Costa Rica and the Amazon, and I can’t wait to use this book in those lessons! Parents- you do not need to speak fluent Spanish to use this book, nor do you have to be a yoga instructor. This book is about introducing kids to yoga in a fun way, while entertaining them with a story of little Sophie, set in the lush rainforest. Great read-aloud for Spanish storytime or a bilingual preschool setting.

Sophia has won a trip to Costa Rica for her family. Sophia is excited to go hiking, canoeing, swimming and to see all of the jungle animals. She and her family also see some of the destruction that people are doing to the rainforest. Sophia has a wonderful adventure full of beautiful sights and great activities.

I love that Sophia’s Jungle Adventure is interactive, assigning a yoga pose to certain words. Through Sophia’s adventure kids will be led on a short yoga flow that is perfect for waking up and getting moving or relaxing before bed. Many of the poses correspond with activities kids are familiar with, such as going on a plane or swimming and animals that they love: monkeys, cats, butterflies and snakes. Kids who are learning Spanish will also find it easy to learn some of the highlighted words. Overall, a fun and interactive books that teaches kids about the jungle, jungle animals and gets kids active.

I’m a Spanish teacher at an all-girls school in Austin, and I teach a huge range of ages, K-8. As you probably know, yoga works for any and every age! I am so grateful to you for filling a long-empty space in my class routine by translating the kid-friendly poses into Spanish and providing fun images to go along with them.

I am not sure you if you are familiar with the second-language teaching concept of TPR (total physical response), but it’s very close to what teaching yoga to kids in another language is. That is, without needing to translate, a teacher would say “Toquen los pies,” and touch her feet. The kids would copy her, then learn over time that “toquen” means touch and “pies” are feet.

I use this technique every day in class because it works and gets the kids moving. Their favorite part is being the teacher which means they are speaking the language! So again, thank you for translating your books to Spanish. I will use them in class every day with very minor, age-appropriate adjustments to the wording.

The sun salutations are a real life saver in Spanish class…more and more teachers recommend “brain breaks” for classes of all ages, so I feel really great about incorporating this element.

I have to applaud Giselle Shardlow on her “out of the box” thinking towards yoga and Spanish. Her approach is nothing short of groundbreaking. She has effortlessly and seamlessly combined the two and made this book a must-have for anyone involved in primary education. Storytelling is key to children’s learning and with the clear illustrations and colorful descriptions, the author has gone the extra mile. What a way to bring parents and educators and children together in this fun, healthy and educational fashion. Hopefully, there will be further books in Spanish in the future.

I am a yoga teacher and I teach children’s yoga in Spanish. It was very nice to find Giselle’s book to use in my classes. It is fun, simple, easy to understand, and very cute. It teaches the basic yoga poses and at the same time educates children about the environment. It has a complete guide at the end for parents and teachers to use. Nothing better than the gift of yoga at an early age!

This potential goes beyond the important elements of context, illustrations and movement which are all a part of this book. Reading Sofía en una aventura por la selva with Spanish language learners will enhance language development on another level as well, beyond the words represented by the poses and the exposure to comprehensible input. The practice of yoga itself is conducive to language learning.

Sophia is off on an adventure with her family. They’ll be taking an airplane to Costa Rica and exploring the jungle and the rainforest. As you can imagine, her whole family will explore an exciting new world. And, as the story unfolds, we watch to see how certain activities, objects or animals remind Sophia and her little brother of yoga postures they know.

Although yoga is an art form that dates back centuries, it can be practiced by very young children in a way that immediately inspires and delights. This book is a perfect way of sharing yoga poses and practices as well as a love and curiosity for our beautiful, bright and diverse planet.

I reviewed the Spanish version of this book and recommend it highly to my readers, especially those with “all abilities kids”.

The yoga poses are simple and easy to do, so simple that children and even adults that have never done a yoga pose can actually do them. What I really liked about this story book is the guide at the end for parents & teachers with suggestion on how to best utilize the story book.
