According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), US adults have reported a significant elevation in mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, and other trauma/stress-related disorders.
Not surprisingly, the prevalence of anxiety is up three times and depressive symptoms have increased four times compared to the second quarter of 2019.
Emotions are coming up fast and furious… and without adequate and healthy outlets to de-stress, cope, and manage what's arising, our mental health will likely decline even more.
For all of us, self-regulation is becoming harder and harder.
And, adequate coping strategies can be challenging to figure out. Who has time?
Many of us are in survival mode, reacting to life events and not finding healthy ways to respond to what we’re feeling.
But we can’t stay in survival mode forever without a detrimental impact on our mental, emotional, and physical health.
We CAN turn this around with some simple tools to help ground, center, calm, and cope with the ups and downs of daily life.
First, we need to recognize that self-care is NOT a luxury.
Self-care is necessary for living a healthy, happy, and balanced life.
I don’t think anyone would argue that breathing is a luxury. But sadly, many people are not fully breathing in a way that enables them to be healthy. They are breathing shallowly and even periodically holding their breath, which does not fully oxygenate their bodies and minds.
Breathing is just one simple way that you can take better care of yourself. Yes, it can be that easy!
Secondly, we need simple tools that can easily integrate into our already-packed lives. As much as we’d love to take a full day to ourselves to rest and discover new tools to take care of ourselves, realistically we need to find ways to integrate self-care practices into our ordinary lives.
Research has shown time and again that yoga, breathwork, and meditation relieves anxiety, calms the body and mind, decreases stress, and promotes healthy coping skills.
There is no better time than right now to adopt a daily practice to manage these challenging times and set yourself up for a healthy, happy, and balanced future.

Just like a flight attendant’s instructions say to “put on your own mask before assisting others,” we must ground ourselves before we can be effective teachers, parents, practitioners, or caregivers.
