10 Children’s Books about Love and Friendship

This month’s focus at Kids Yoga Stories is on Self-Esteem.  I believe that feeling confident is linked with having love and meaningful friendships in our lives.  A great way to talk to children about these topics is through reading a book together, and using the story as a springboard for discussion.

Books about Love and Friendship

Here are our very favorite books on love and friendship.

Books about Love | Kids Yoga Stories

Snuggle Puppy
by Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton’s books are a must-have for infants and toddlers.  Her fun and catchy language captivates both the child and parent.  Adorable.
“I love what you are.  I love what you do.  Fuzzy little Snuggle Puppy, I love you.”

Love You Forever
by Robert Munsch, illustrated by Sheila McGraw

One of my favorite authors, Robert Munsch. I still have a hard time getting through this book without getting choked up at the end. Repetitious text, and the children follow along.
“I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, As long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.”

Frog in Love
by Max Velthuijs

Probably one of my all-time favorite books, ever. I used to read this book every Valentine’s Day when I taught Grades 3/4. At the last page, the children would always say “Awwwwwwwe”. So cute.  Great book to talk about diversity and different cultures too.

Froggy’s First Kiss
by Jonathan London, illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz
Another adorable froggie who is in love with his classmate, Frogilina.  I love all the Froggy books.  Fun, goofy, repetitious rhythmic language, cool illustrations.

“Her name was Frogilina, and when she smiled at him his insides got all soft and wiggly, like he’d had caterpillars for breakfast.”

The Giving Tree
by Shel Silverstein

A book for children and adults. A classic Shel Silverstein. Deep message of unconditional love and giving/taking. Another must-have book.
“I don’t need very much now,” said the boy, “just a quiet place to sit and rest.  I am very tired.”

Hug Time
by Patrick McDonnell

This our favorite family book right now. My hubby knows all the words! Totally adorable story of a kitten so filled with love that he travels the world to give everyone/everything a hug.
“The world is so big …
And yet so small, It’s time that we embrace it all.  That’s something that we all can do.  Start with the one who’s closest to you.  HUG TIME!”

I Love You Because You’re You
by Liza Baker, illustrated by David McPhail
Sweet book with engaging, rhyming text.

“I love you any way you are.  I love you because you’re you!”

Guess How Much I Love You
by Sam McBratney, illustrated by Anita Jeram

I love you this much (with arms out-stretched). I think this one will be around in our house for years to come.  An engaging tale of a bunny and his mom.  Heart-warming.
“I love you right up to the moon – and back.”

Lost and Found
by Oliver Jeffers

I bought this book for my nephew and it was a hit.  Very talented writer and illustrator.  A darling story of a boy who finds, then loses his friend penguin.  Great to discuss the importance of love and friendships.
“It felt strange for the boy to be on his own.  There was no point telling stories now because there was no one to listen except the wind and the waves.”

Anna and her Rainbow-Colored Yoga Mats
by Giselle Shardlow, illustrated by Paul Wrangles
A gentle story of a girl and boy who bond on their yoga mats at recess time.  A tale of happiness, acceptance, and friendship.

“Be true to yourself, Anna.  If you want to be happy, then you must be happy for others around you.”
