Virtual Book Club: Garden

Kids Yoga Stories is a proud sponsor of the Virtual Book Club Summer Camp hosted by Toddler Approved, Rainy Day Mum, and The Educators’ Spin On It.  Check out their websites for information on their five week program, including suggested thematic books and activities.

This week is GARDEN week.

Virtual Book Club: Garden Books and Kids Yoga

Our four garden-inspired activities:

Activity #1:  A Five for Five: Five kids yoga poses in five minutes inspired by our trip to the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers to their special Butterfly & Blooms exhibit.

Butterfly Garden: Five for Five

Fish – Locust Pose
(lay on your tummy, lift your head and shoulders, bent your legs up, and stretch your arms back alongside your body)

Butterfly – Cobbler’s (Butterfly) Pose
(sit on your buttocks with a tall spine, bend your legs, bring the soles of your feet together, and flap your legs like a butterfly)

Flower – Lotus Pose
(from Butterfly Pose, lift your legs up, balance on your buttocks, and weave your arms through your bent legs)

Turtle – Extended Child’s Pose
(come to sit back on your heels, bend forward, rest your forehead in front of your knees, and stretch your arms out in front)

Rock Garden – Child’s Pose
(simply take your arms back alongside your body, and rest in Child’s Pose)

Feel free to add or change the poses.

Activity #2:  We just found this garden book at the library and have been enjoying the close-up photographs.  The book follows a repetitious, engaging text, “Look very closely.  What do you see?”  Another Five for Five: Five kids yoga poses in five minutes with keywords from the book, Looking Closely Inside The Garden by Frank Serafini:

Looking Closely Inside the Garden book: Five for Five

Cricket – Lizard Pose
(from plank pose bring your right foot to the outside of your right hand, and pretend you are a cricket)

Earthworm – Locust Pose
(come to laying on your belly, and inch along as if you are an earthworm)

Butterfly – Butterfly Pose
(sit on your buttocks with a tall spine, bend your legs, bring the soles of your feet together, and flap your legs like a butterfly)

Flower – Lotus Pose
(from Butterfly Pose, lift your bent legs up, balance on your buttocks, and weave your arms through your legs)

Snail – Child’s Pose
(come back to sitting on your heels, bend forward, rest your forehead in front of your knees, and rest your arms down alongside your body)

Activity #3:  Next, you could download this little story, Rachel’s Day in the Garden, to read, illustrate, and act out with your children.

Rachel’s Day in the Garden: A Kids Yoga Stories Colors Mini-Book

The printable story includes eleven pages of story with blank space to create your own illustrations and a List of Kids Yoga Poses.

Activity #4:  Lastly, check out this lovely book, Our Community Garden by Barbara Pollak, about a group of children in San Francisco who work together in a local community garden.  The story is a great way to talk about how to plant a garden, what tools you would need, which bugs you might find, and what food you could enjoy together when the veggies grow.

How did you celebrate GARDENING this week with the Virtual Book Club?  I hope these activities helped to bring some movement and laughter to your garden studies!
