SMART Goals: July, 2014

Long, hot summer days are here!

After a long, cold winter, my daughter and I are so excited to be outdoors again. So we’re out of the house early and back home just before bedtime. (We still get excited to see deer in our backyard- like this one pictured on the right.)

Last night, as I was reading her books before bed, I started to think about Read Aloud’s campaign to promote reading aloud for 15 minutes a day. This is especially important during the summer months, because the research shows that a significant loss of academic performance can occur while children are out of school.

As a teacher, I never understood how parents couldn’t find the time to read books with their children in the summer, but now as a mom, I get it! Yikes, time to re-think our daily summer schedule.

How do you get at least 15 minutes of reading in per day over the summer?

Join the Read Aloud for 15 Minutes national campaign in July to help spread this important message:

Did you catch our articles last month?

Our articles in June at Kids Yoga Stories as part of our SMART Goals

It was a busy June, with lots of fun kids’ activities and end-of-school preparations. Now, we are going to wind down, take advantage of the warm weather, and enjoy the summer together as a family!

How about you?

What are your goals for July? What challenges are you having? What successes are you celebrating?

My SMART goals for July

Each month, I ask myself these three questions:

  • What makes me happy?
  • How am I living a healthy lifestyle?
  • How am I living my passion?

This year, I’m teaming up with a group of mommy bloggers, and we’re all writing our monthly goals in the hopes of inspiring you to write your goals, too. Please join us, tell us your goals, and share your successes and failures. There is a group of supportive mommy bloggers here who would love to hear from you, too!

This month, I will:

HAPPINESS:

  • Socialize with local families through parent meet-ups, playgroups, and book club at least once a week.
  • Phone a close friend and my mom at least once a week.
  • Take weekly “me time” breaks, especially to read. Our book club is reading The Goldfinchby Donna Tartt – it’s a great one!
  • Complete at least one big “house task” a week (the sense of accomplishment makes me happy).
  • Spend quality time with my daughter and embrace the miracles of toddlerhood.

HEALTHY:

  • Attend one to two yoga classes per week at a nearby yoga studio.
  • Jog around our neighborhood three to four times a week.
  • Start tracking how many miles I run and how many calories I eat (ugh!).
  • Go for weekly hikes with my husband and daughter.
  • Eat healthy, fresh, whole food.

PASSION:

  • Write about our books and activities from Growing Book by Book for the Love Books Exchange.
  • Post an ocean-inspired kids yoga sequence inspired by Giles Andreae book for Virtual Book Club.
  • Share our third Kids Love Yoga post, which will focus on Bridge Pose. (Send your photos of kiddos in Bridge Pose to giselle at kidsyogastories dot com by July 23rd to be added to the collection.)
  • Continue with the production of the next three of our yoga books: 123 African Safari, Sophia Explores the Ocean, and Rachel’s Day in the Garden.
  • Finish editing the feelings yoga book and the summer camp yoga book.
  • Attend a Mompreneurs local meet-up to connect with other business owners.

As always, I would love to hear your feedback. Please e-mail me at giselle at kidsyogastories dot com with your suggestions for improvement, either for the yoga stories or website. Help me deliver high-quality content that assists you with bringing happiness, health, and global education to children everywhere.

What is your theme for July? What does your mind, body, and spirit need right now? Who is your accountability partner (i.e. someone who helps keep you on track with your goals)? What would make you happy?
