A Five for Five: Five kids yoga poses in five minutes inspired the animals that we saw last week in the Northern Californian forest:

Five for Five: Forest Animals

Coyote – Extended Cat Pose
(On hands-and-knees, extend one leg straight behind you, and look up)

Brown Bear – Downward-Facing Dog Pose
(Push up to hands-and-feet, lifting your buttocks high, and walk like a bear)

Ground Squirrel – Hero’s Pose
(Come back to sitting on your heels, and pretend to eat nuts with your hands)

Red Fox – Kneeling
(Come up to kneeling on your knees, and look up to the moon)

Yellow-bellied Marmot- Child’s Pose
(Rest back on your heels, bring your head to rest in front of your knees, and relax your arms alongside your body)

Feel free to add or change the poses. Creativity is encouraged.

Forest Animals Activity #2:

A kids yoga sequence with the forest animals in Bear Snores On, by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman:

Bear Snores On book

Brown Bear – Downward-Facing Dog Pose

Raven – Crow Pose

Badger – Extended Cat Pose

Hare – Hero’s Pose with Bunny Breath

Gopher – Extended Child’s Pose

Mouse or Mole – Child’s Pose

Forest Animals Activity #3:

Read forest-related books.

Our in-laws just picked up Baby Bear Discovers the World, by Marion Dane Bauer and Stan Tekiela, for our daughter.  The forest photography is stunning.  It’s a sweet tale of a baby bear leaving his mama to discover the world.

Five for Five: Baby Bear Discovers the World book

Bald Eagle – Eagle Pose, wrapping your arms and legs

Duck – Squat Pose, with flapping arms like wings

Brown Bear – Downward-Facing Dog Pose, walk like a bear

Moose – Seated Twist, with hands up for antlers

Mouse – Child’s Pose, resting like a mouse

Another one of our favorite forest books right now is Over in the Forest, by Marianne Berkes and Jill Dubin.  We love the “Over in the Meadow” rhyming text.  Lots of opportunity to “act” out each of the animals through kids yoga.

We love visiting the Visitor’s Centers in the National Parks in the USA.  We always find quality books for children.  Our latest find is a series of comprehensive non-fiction books by Marianne Wallace.  She has one of the America’s Forests: Guide to Plants and Animals.

How did you celebrate the FOREST this week? I hope these activities helped to bring some movement and laughter to your forest studies!

See you next week for the final ANIMAL week.
