Animal Yoga Poses for Kids

Read and act out Animal Boogie by Debbie Harter published by Barefoot Books.  We love this one!  A “Five for Five: Five kids yoga poses in five minutes” inspired by the book:

The Animal Boogie: 5 for 5

Hornbill – Warrior 3 Pose
(stand on one leg, bend torso forward, lift other leg backwards, and flap your wings)

Elephant – Elephant Pose
(stand with legs apart, clasp hands in front, bend torso forward, and swing your arms like an elephant’s truck)

Sloth Bear – Downward-Facing Dog Pose
(go back on hands-and feet, and walk like a bear)

Leopard – Extended Cat Pose
(come down to hands-and knees, look forward, and do a lion’s breath)

Cobra – Cobra Pose
(on your tummy, lift head and shoulders off ground, place palms flat next to your shoulders, and hiss like a snake)

Animal Yoga Activity #2:

Read and act out Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carle and Bill Martin Jr.

Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? kids yoga sequence

Baby Bear – Eagle Pose
(wrapping arms and legs around a tree)

Fox – Cow Pose
(on hands-and-knees, look up to the moon)

Flying Squirrel – Locust Pose
(on tummy with arms and legs stretched out)

Mountain Goat – Downward-Facing Dog Pose
(on hands-and-feet, walk like a goat)

Blue Heron – Warrior 3 Pose
(stand on one leg with opposite leg stretched out behind you, and flap your wings)

Prairie Dog – Hero’s Pose
(sit back on your heels, and dig your paws into the ground)

Striped Skunk – Cat Pose
(on hands-and knees, look down, and pretend to sniff the ground)

Mule Deer – Hero’s Pose with Twist
(sit back on your heels, twist your upper body, and put your hands up for antlers)

Rattlesnake – Cobra Pose
(lay on your tummy, and hiss like a snake)

Screech Owl – Hero’s Pose
(sit back on heels, turn side to side with hands in circles over eyes)

Mama Bear – Downward-Facing Dog Pose
(on hands-and-feet, do a bear walk)

Animal Yoga Activity #3:

Read and act out the The Busy Little Squirrel, by Nancy TafuriHere’s a kids yoga sequence to go with the book:

The Busy Little Squirrel kids yoga sequence

1. Squirrel – Mountain Pose
(picking up pretend acorns with toes)

2. Frog – Squat Pose
(squat like a frog, hop)

3. Dog – Downward-Facing Dog Pose
(on hands-and-feet, bow-wow)

4. Bird – Pigeon Pose
(bring right foot to rest behind right hand, and perch like a bird)

5. Cat – Cat Pose
(hands-and-knees, arch up and back)

6. Owl – Hero Pose with twist
(sit on heels, twist)

7. Mouse – Child’s Pose
(rest back on heels, place forehead in front of knees, rest arms back, breathe)

Pretend to visit the jungle and act out Sophia’s Jungle Adventure.  A “Five for Five: Five kids yoga sequences in five minutes” with five jungle animals:

Toucan – Warrior 3 Pose
(stand on one leg with the opposite leg stretched out behind you, bend your torso, and flap your wings)

Monkey – Squat Pose
(squat down, and pretend you are a monkey)

Jaguar – Cat Pose
(on hands-and-knees, walk like a jaguar)

Boa Constrictor – Cobra Pose
(lay on your tummy, lift your head and shoulders up, and hiss like a snake)

Butterfly Pose – Cobbler’s Pose
(sit on your buttocks, bend your legs, bring the soles of your feet together, and flap your legs like wings)
